My Story

ART RAISED ME
POETRY FREED ME
Before I spoke, I drew
Before I wrote, I dreamed
Before I understood the world
I surrounded myself in it.
-Jacalyn Eyvonne
Co-Poet Laureate, City of Vallejo, CA
January 2024 - December 2025
Jacalyn Eyvonne moves between ink, imagery, and motion. She is a writer, illustrator, photographer, and filmmaker, weaving poetry through every art form.
I grew up with a mom who loved reading. My mother worked the graveyard shift at a major county hospital in Los Angeles. When she arrived home in the mornings, her bedtime began, and I read her books while she slept. The wall of the family den was filled with works of fiction and nonfiction across a wide range of genres, poetry, history, romance novels, and offerings by some of the most well-known mystery and horror story writers. Today, my walls are filled with the inspiration from the art of others, and that which I have created myself, and of course, books.
While fascinated with poetry, reading her horror stories became intoxicating. I lived between the poetic voice and the intensity of fear, finding myself jumping and squealing aloud or crying tears of both joy and sadness as I read the verses. Some might consider my writing a curious combination; however, I love a variety of genres and refuse to be boxed into a single category. I am, as my teacher described, a multidimensional creative.
I began writing my own stories at a young age and fell in love with the mystery horror genre. Murder became my velleity, and so did scary movies. It was at this time that I also began writing poetry. In the 90s, I became the founding editor of the international magazine “In The Company of Poets.”
A graduate of the Academy of Art University in Motion Picture and Television, I am also an independent filmmaker, dabbling in bringing my own short stories to visual life. While some of my story’s sojourns are splattered in the macabre, many are not. I write, direct, produce, and have a hungering sweet tooth for both the poetic and eerie.”
